On Friday, to celebrate our ‘Theologically Rooted Christian Vision’ the children took part in activities related to the parable of the Mustard Seed:
‘The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds but when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.’
[Mark 4. 30-32, Matthew13. 31-32, Luke 13. 18-19]
Park Street C of E Primary School is a small school that has a large effect on those who come here. We teach and we learn that small deeds and individual beings can have large and consequential effects on the world in which we live. The mustard seed of Park Street grows to become a sustaining, protecting and invigorating environment for all who ‘lodge’ here, before they travel onwards, taking all they have learned and experienced with them.
The children designed their own ‘Mustard Trees’, with the leaves labelled with things they do and learn at Park Street, which build them up into a big tree! Also, they used water colours and wax resist to design a tree, showing how a small amount of wax can have a great effect. They also wrote about small things they can do, at home and school, which have a big effect on their family and community. Finally, they looked at the ‘Pale Blue Dot’ picture, considered how our whole planet looks like a mustard seed from far away, and designed a poster using oil pastels about all the things on earth they love.
